“Although the debate on the future of food may give the impression of steep fronts and unsolvable dilemmas, the reality is more nuanced. It is precisely in this landscape that we find solutions that do not dig us further into a system that is rigged for profitability, but that rig the country and the sector to preserve resources and livelihoods for the future. There are plenty of Norwegian technology and companies that dare to innovate in one of our most traditional industries, and that are showing signs of the transformation we may not realise when we witness the farmers' revolt further south in Europe.

Several Norwegian companies are excelling in different segments of agriculture, ranging from beneficial biological crop protection for non-toxic greenhouses, soil improvement technologies for sustainable soil and carbon storage over time, and agricultural machinery that prevents over-fertilisation. The sustainability innovators here are playing on the same team as the Norwegian farmers, and now the government must do the same. Sustainable agriculture increases self-sufficiency over time, and self-sufficiency increases preparedness. As with other forms of preparedness, self-sufficiency is worth the investment made by both the public sector and us as consumers. If we are to succeed with sustainable and future-oriented food production, we need deliberate action - from both sides.”
