“In our time when forest fires are raging, and termites and new diseases are attacking our forests and the lives within them, it's hard to explain to future stewards that the real threat is humans.
Nor is it an easy job to help them process this information. If you Google ‘how to talk to children about eco-grief’, nothing comes up. Nor does a search for nature loss or ecocide. However, we know that this loss starts a general grieving process, and the same advice applies as with any other experienced loss.
We need to acknowledge the grief, listen and take it seriously, while at the same time being honest and recognising what is happening. Ecological grief can be intense, and children need to be comforted. It might help to say it won't feel like this forever.
But at this point, we can't say that everything will be OK in the end - because if we don't do something now, it won't be.
So most of all, explain to your child that it is possible to stop this. If we talk to enough people, create enough public opinion, get enough voices to speak up. Get enough politicians to walk the same paths as us, so the laws will change. New agreements will be made. That new rules will apply. May it happen soon. May it happen in time.”
